INTERNSHIPS AT THE ROYAL THAI EMBASSY

OVERVIEW

The Royal Thai Embassy offers internship experiences to many individuals. Our internship program is designed to provide students with an opportunity for involvement in Thai governmental affairs, and to provide a general understanding of the Thai-U.S. bilateral relationship through the dynamics at work in the Embassy.

PROSPECTIVE INTERNS

The Royal Thai Embassy is looking for individuals who possess excellent work ethics, initiative, creativity, flexibility, motivation, and is interested in obtaining work experience. We encourage qualified undergraduates (junior or higher) to apply, as well as graduate students and those in between degrees.  The Embassy offers full-time and part-time internships, and for individuals wishing to obtain course credit. On a voluntary basis, schedules can be negotiated though a full-time commitment is desirable. The normal office hours are from 9 am to 5 pm. However, in some project-based occasions, interns are expected to be available during other hours.  Internship applicants should also be proficient in both Thai and English.  In addition, they are expected to have the following basic skills: academic research, computer and internet usage, and strong communication skills.

THE EXPERIENCE

There are various opportunities for interns at the Royal Thai Embassy. Typical duties completed by previous interns include:

  • Researching on political, economic, and social issues. Past research topics include US-Thailand trade, Intellectual property rights and the Free Trade Agreement, US-based companies and their operations in Thailand.
  • Attending Capitol Hill functions, seminars, public hearings and briefings
  • Drafting Thai and English reports for the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Promoting Thai culture through various events in and around Washington DC
  • Assisting in project-based activities such as the annual Thai Festival
  • Designing webpage and updating the Embassy's website contents
  • Coordinating with US governmental agencies to accommodate visiting Thai delegates
  • Accommodating visiting Thai delegates
  • Delivering documents to governmental agencies for the Embassy's staff
  • Creating database of US Congressional members, their committee memberships, voting records and contacts
  • Translating documents
  • Assisting the Embassy's staff with daily clerical office assignments

COMPENSATION

This internship opportunity provides no compensation, with exception of course credits.

HOUSING AND TRAVEL

Interns are expected to find and cover the cost of their own room and board while interning at the Embassy. Many universities in the Washington DC area provide reasonably priced housing for summer interns.  Interns are also expected to cover for their own travel expense to work whether by car, metro or bus.

Individuals interested in obtaining an internship with the Royal Thai Embassy must submit the following documents at least 3 months before the beginning date:

  • A resume that includes your educational background
  • At least one recommendation letter

Once received, these documents will be reviewed thoroughly by the Embassy. If the applicant meets the requirements, the Embassy will contact to notify and schedule an oral interview with the applicant.
