the 63rd Session of the UNGA
On 29 September 2008, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
of Foreign Affairs Sompong Amornvivat, in his capacity as the ASEAN Chair, led his
ASEAN colleagues in a meeting with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United
Nations (UNSG) and Father Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, President of the 63rd Session
of the United Nations General Assembly.
Under the theme of ASEAN and the UN: Building a Partnership
for Multidimensional Aspects of Human Security and Development, the meeting discussed
a number of issues aimed at strengthening the ASEAN-UN Partnership, including ASEAN-UN
cooperation in such areas as disaster management, food security, strengthening partnership
under the ASEAN-UN Memorandum of Understanding, as well as important international
issues of mutual interest and concern.
The Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister also took the
opportunity to reiterate Thailand’s invitation to the UNSG to attend the Third ASEAN-UN
Summit, to be held in Bangkok on 18 December 2008, which would provide both sides
with another timely opportunity to further enhance the ASEAN-UN Partnership.
Following the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign
Minister also hosted lunch in honour of all the delegates.
