A presentation by Narong Prangcharoen,
one of Thailand’s leading composers
On the evening of November 6th, 2008, the Royal Thai Embassy
hosted a presentation for Mr. Narong Prangcharoen, one of Thailand’s leading composers.
Narong had been described by the Los Angeles Times as “a composer with a gift for
creating orchestral color”. He received the Alexander Zemlinski International Composition
competition prize, the 18th ACL Yoshiro Irino Memorial Composition Award, the Pacific
Symphony’s American Composers Competition Prize, the Toru Takemitsu Composition
Award and just last year, the Silipathorn Award in Thailand.
In the presentation, Narong talked about his life-long journey and all the different
obstacles he had to overcome. He had left his hometown to Bangkok at the age of
10 to pursue his passion for music. Aside from writing, composing and recording
his own music, he currently holds many different positions at a number of schools
and universities in both the US and Thailand. Narong was announced the winner of
the Annapoils Charter 300 Young Composers Competition from his composition “Tri
Sattawat” (literally “Third Centenary”), the piece that was to be played by the
Annapolis Symphony Orchestra on November 7th, 2008 at Maryland Hall of the Creative
Arts.
He concluded his presentation that evening by explaining how much of an honor it
was to compose “Tears of Dust” in honor of Her Royal Highness the late Princess
Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of His Majesty the King of Thailand. The composition
was played on February 21st, 2008 by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra in the requiem
concert.
