A reception to welcome the newly arrived Thai Students under the
AFS-USA Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program 2008-2009

            On Monday, 11 August 2008, Mr. Damrong Kraikruan, Charge D’Affaires a.i., and the Embassy officials together with the local media, held a reception to welcome the newly arrived Thai Students under the AFS-USA Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program 2008-2009. Of 19 students, many of them are Muslim from the southern part of Thailand. They were on their way to stay with American host families in various states for 1 year.
           AFS has been well recognized in Thailand for over 60 years. The purpose is to promote education and cultural exchange programs. It also aims to promote greater understanding and interaction between students from different cultures. The programs help students develop their knowledge, skills, and personal expertise so that they learn how to live with others peacefully.
           On this occasion, the Charge D’Affaires a.i. gave the students his advice on living and studying abroad. He also shared that students are invaluable resources of the nation and will be the future of the country. Thailand will be on a firm footing only when its youths are developed with quality, discipline, and virtue.
           In 2007, AFS also organized this same program in which most of the participating students were Muslim from the southern part of Thailand. They appreciated opportunities for their education and the way their worldviews have been broadened.

งานเลี้ยงต้อนรับเด็กนักเรียนทุน
AFS-USA Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program รุ่นปี 2551-2552

           เมื่อวันจันทร์ที่ 11 สิงหาคม 2551 นายดำรง ใคร่ครวญ อุปทูต ณ กรุงวอชิงตัน และข้าราชการสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ พร้อมด้วยผู้แทนสื่อมวลชนท้องถิ่นได้ต้อนรับเด็กนักเรียนทุน AFS-USA Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program รุ่นปี 2551-2552 ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวไทยมุสลิมในภาคใต้ จำนวน 19 คน ณ สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ ก่อนเดินทางไปศึกษาและพำนักอยู่กับครอบครัวท้องถิ่นตามมลรัฐต่างๆ เป็นเวลา 1 ปี 
           AFS เป็นที่รู้จักในประเทศไทยเป็นเวลานานกว่า 60 ปี โดยที่ผ่านมาได้จัดโครงการเพื่อการเรียนรู้ด้านภาษาและแลกเปลี่ยนทางวัฒนธรรมอย่างต่อเนื่อง วัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจอันดีและการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างมีความสุขระหว่างวัฒนธรรม นอกจากนั้น ยังเป็นการพัฒนาความรู้ ความถนัดและทักษะส่วนบุคคล จนสามารถปรับตนเองให้อยู่ร่วมกับบุคคลอื่นที่มีความแตกต่างทางวัฒนธรรมได้อย่างมีความสุข
ในโอกาสนี้ อุปทูต ณ กรุงวอชิงตันได้ให้คำแนะนำถึงแนวทางการศึกษาและดำรงชีวิตของนักเรียนในต่างแดน รวมทั้งขอให้มองสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ เหมือนบ้านแห่งที่สอง
           เยาวชนที่ได้รับทุนมาศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศในครั้งนี้เป็นทรัพยากรที่สำคัญยิ่งของชาติและจะเป็นอนาคตของภูมิภาคและของประเทศซึ่งน่าที่จะได้รับการสนับสนุนอย่างต่อเนื่อง ประเทศไทยจะสามารถอยู่รอดและพัฒนาให้มีความก้าวหน้าและมั่นคงได้ ต่อเมื่อเยาวชนของไทยเติบโตขึ้นเป็นทรัพยากรบุคคลที่มีคุณภาพ มีวินัย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งมีคุณธรรมและคำนึงถึงประโยชน์ส่วนรวม   
           เมื่อปี 2550 ที่ผ่านมา AFS ดำเนินโครงการในลักษณะเดียวกัน โดยเยาวชนที่เข้าร่วมโครงการส่วนใหญ่เป็นไทยมุสลิมในภาคใต้ ซึ่งเยาวชนที่เข้าร่วมโครงการมีความพอใจมาก โดยเฉพาะเป็นการเปิดโลกทัศน์และขยายโอกาสทางการศึกษาให้กับเยาวชนไทยมุสลิม
